Continuing to develop extrospective awareness and sensitivity to the felt sense of metta leads to a perception of what’s referred to as the ‘energy body’, or ‘subtle body’.
This is essentially composed of any physically felt sensations with non-physical causes (i.e. not pressure, temperature, texture, etc.). The experience of the energy body is often described subjectively as a kind of “second body”, or separate layer of sensations, beneath the coarser and more obvious physical ones.
This is the layer where emotions, and—more to the point—metta is felt.
As you become more and more attuned to this level of experience, even the static, solid, defined physical sensations of the body start to dissolve and become experienced more like a formless cloud of electric vibrations. Indeed even the already quite formless experiences of emotions lose their overlay of meaning and intention and become clouds of dynamic energy.
Having an open sensitivity to this level of experience provides fertile ground for the felt sense of metta to spread and become more stable and vivid.
