The felt sense of metta is felt in the body. This means that having a stable background body awareness is a deeply supportive faculty when it comes to becoming sensitive to those little sparks of felt sense. When awareness is collapsed, it’s like there’s no space for metta to grow in; no sensitivity to it, and therefore no possibility for appreciation or nurturing.
Having an open awareness of the space of the body, and the space around the body, is a very helpful capacity to have more broadly in meditation too; dullness and sleepiness are much less likely to develop, and things in general feel more vivid and open. This open background awareness will also make it easier for you to cultivate awareness of thoughts that distract you, and views or intentions that colour your experience of meditation.
