Section Four: Transforming Hindrances with Metta

Introduction

This section deals with hindrances, difficulties, and obstacles that tend to arise during metta practice, and as much as possible uses a metta practice or view to help transform those obstacles.
You can do the practices from this section at any time, whenever something isn’t quite feeling right.
This section is also optional - if everything feels like it’s flowing and unrestricted and easy, then you can move on.
Remember that if - and actually when - difficulties arise, it doesn’t mean that you’re doing anything wrong! Working with hindrances is part of the practice. In fact, it’s often a sign of progress; you’ve developed enough awareness to notice an obstacle that’s always been there.
There are practices in this section to work with if you’re continuing to find that there’s just no sense of metta arising, as well as “monkey mind” - i.e. a restless mind that won’t settle, persistent sticky distractions, and dullness and sleepiness.
